Can I avoid the wash sale rules by trading in different accounts?

George -

The IRS has thought of this! Wash sale rules apply to the investor (across multiple accounts, including tax-advantaged retirement accounts like IRAs) and the household. If you sell a stock in your taxable account and repurchase the security in your IRA within 30 days, the loss is disallowed, though the retirement account basis is not increased.
